Low-tech Magazine: The Comic

Filmmaker Guillaume Lion visited Low-tech Magazine in Barcelona and turned his experience into a comic for the Belgian magazine Médor.

In early 2022 I received an email from Guillaume Lion, a young filmmaker based in Brussels, Belgium. Having read Low-tech Magazine for several years, Guillaume recently started making comics, which he considers low-tech cinema. He proposed to visit me in Barcelona and make a portrait of me. The comic originally appeared in French in the Belgian magazine Médor and was translated by Mira Matthew.

Hey Kris,

maybe you can’t fight the wind and win but thank you for fighting it nonetheless for us all and reminding us that a different world is possible. And who knows, maybe in a fucked up future humanity will need your articles more than you realize now. Anyway, keep up the good fight!

Thank you Michael

Hi Guillaume, this is great. I’ve had similar thoughts about comics as low-tech cinema, especially in the online world where media assets have gotten so heavy. I’ve mused about what social networks could look like, with technical and cultural practice around low-tech — using comics, gifs, and images, in place of videos where possible. While enjoying this comic here, I realized that in so many cases, reading a comic or a graphic novel or a manga (or a book!) can be more enjoyable than watching a video online. Imagine if comics were more present in our feeds, and our media platforms were designed for them? They are an excellent foundation for stories, communication, leisure and learning, and a great low-tech media. I’m glad you made this story, and shared your thoughts behind it!

Hey Kris and Guillaume,

Thank you very much for this great report, Guillaume.

Thank you very much for your work and for…being you, Kris.

Very accurately observed (I believe), lovingly drawn and very funny! Très sympa!

Dear Kris,

thank you so much for opening up a window into your personal world for all of us. I sincerely appreciate you sharing this with us.

Dear Guillaume – really enjoyable style of reporting – though in this case I would have loved it to be longer 😉, reminds me of Guy Delisle’s biographic books, though more 1980s in style. Thank you for taking the trouble of traveling to Barcelona!

Best regards, Mario.

Dear Kris,

The ideas in your magazine are very valuable. Please don’t give up hope. We must hope if humanity is going to survive. The only way we can survive is a reorganization of society. This will not happen according to profit so it must be socialist. Luckily if we succeed (and we must believe we can) your ideas could easily be presented to planners to properly spread them, allowing us to live sustainably. For a more detailed case I recommend the book ‘socialism or extinction.’ For an optimistic vision of an attainable future I recommend ‘half earth socialism.’

Keep up the great work!
